A Fall Chill Cocktail

When the seasons start to change and late summer turns to early fall, it’s time for a cocktail overhaul.  Why not try this unusual and stylish little sipper, an Asian Pear Martini?   Such a elegant and tasty turn into Autumn.  

I have to admit, I’m not an expert on Asian Pears.  I’ve seen them in the grocery stores, carefully wrapped in the produce section.  Our neighbors have a tree and gave us a few of them.  I started looking into what to do with them, of course………Cocktails!   Well, now I’ve discovered that Asian Pear Martinis are everywhere.  Have you ever tried one?  This recipe is a fairly easy. One that you can try without having to have a fully stocked bar.  It’s a “pared down”, Asian Pear Martini.  (See what I did there?)

Asian Pear

Fairly new to the United States, there are over 1000 varieties of Asian pears, also known as “Apple Pears“, originally from Japan.  The Fruit is yellow-green to pale yellow and smooth . This large white-fleshed pear is sweet, firm, crisp, juicy and aromatic.  It is one of the rare species of pears that ripen on the tree.

So, if you’ve never tasted an Asian Pear, they’re crispy like an apple, but all the best flavor of a pear. 

Since I had a few Asian pears, I decided to make the puree for this cocktail by pureeing the Asian pear.  It made the taste really amazing. This cocktail is very mellow, almost vanilla flavored with the combination of brandy, sake and pear puree.  To make the puree, you can use a juicer or just core and cut up a pear.  You don’t even need to peel it.  Add it to your high speed blender with a little water.  When completely pulverized, strain the juice and discard the pulp.

Sake

This recipe uses cold sake, which is different from the hot sake I love to drink at my local sushi bar.  Sake is one of those drinks that has made a very big change in the way it’s made and I wasn’t even paying attention.  Truth is, I love hot Sake and I guess that these days that’s very “ancien mod de vie” (old school).  There are new ways of making Sake that refined the drink into a sipper that’s a bit more refined.  Here’s a link that I found to be very interesting about the changes in Sake and how to drink it correctly: https://www.eat-japan.com/all-about-sake/sake-basics/sake-hot-or-cold/

In 1980 Something……

My friend Eileen and I had a great time on a Sunday afternoon drinking a lot of hot Sake.  We decided to buy some and drink it at my little apartment.  We were heating it in the microwave.  Every time we heated a little cup, of course, the loud ding would signal it was done.  Apparently, we heated so many little cups of sake, the neighbors were gathering outside, getting curious about all the dinging that was going on………  You see, you don’t get that kind of fun drinking cold sake now, do you?

The Asian Pear Martini You Too, Can Make At Home (The Pared Down Asian Pear Martini)

Chill a martini glass while you prepare the cocktail.

Fill a cocktail shaker 1/2 full with ice.  Add 1 ounces of pear puree with 1 1/2 ounces of cold sake and 1 1/2 ounce of brandy. and 1/2 ounce of freshly squeezed lemon juice.  Shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds.   

Strain into your chilled martini glass, sip and enjoy!  Cheers!
